German Bundestag Intends to Block EU Accession Albania

It appears that the CDU/CSU parliamentary majority in Germany will block the opening of EU accession negotiations with Albania, in spite of the recommendation of the European Commission.

Sources of Exit close to the Bundestag confirm that the position of the Bundestag majority is that Albania has not fulfilled the key conditions for the opening of the accession negotiations.

The main problems are:

  • The absence of progress in judicial reform;
  • The absence of progress in the fight against corruption, crime, and drugs;
  • The absence of progress in electoral reform;
  • The absence of progress in the decriminalization process.

Gunther Krichbaum, chairperson of the EU Affairs Commission in the Bundestag, is in Albania today to explain the government and Parliament the position of the Bundestag, which is, in the case of Germany, the institution that decides whether to ratify the opening of the accession negotiations or not.

Krichbaum is expected to hold a press conference today at 16:00, after a meeting with Albanian state officials.
