President Trump’s envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue Richard Grenell has announced talks between Kosovo and Serbia to take place in Washington on June 27.
The surprise announcement comes while the EU envoy Miroslav Lajcak is trying to set an agenda for the dialogue between the two countries. Lajcak is expected to visit Kosovo on Tuesday and discuss with political leaders for several days.
Grenell also announced that after its decision to lift reciprocity measures in trade with Serbia, the Kosovo government has also decided to stop seeking membership in international organizations, at the request of its neighbor. Meanwhile, Serbia has agreed to pause lobbying countries to withdraw their recognition of Kosovo at least until June 27.
The US envoy added that the Washington talks will focus on the economy.
If either side is unsatisfied with the June 27 discussions then they will go back to the status quo after they leave Washington.
As we have consistently said, we must first make progress on growing the economies. This is the focus. I look forward to these discussions. (2/2) https://t.co/r5QLDuC1XI— Richard Grenell (@RichardGrenell) June 15, 2020
