The Fushe-Mbret health centre in Elbasan was attacked with stones on Sunday.
According to reports, the stones which were thrown at the building damaged the windows on the ground floor. Police said they were able to apprehend perpetrators that they believe were responsible for the attack.
Socialist MP Taulant Balla was quick to arrive on the scene and to accuse Opposition leader Lulzim Basha of spreading a negative atmosphere that has spread to citizens, resulting in the attack.
“Evil politicians are inspiring a negative climate towards doctors and medical staff. Lulzim Basha has no shame, no honour, no respect and no moral boundaries. Doing politics with death and attacking doctors and nurses and medical staff is a shame that we will not forget,” he said.
Minister of Health Ogerta Manastirliu also took the opportunity to accuse the Opposition of inciting violence that resulted in the attack on the health centre. She said their offensive rhetoric against the government for their way of managing the pandemic is to blame.
“The stones thrown tody at the health centre in Elbasan, which only a few months ago we rebuilt to the highest standards after four decades, are an act of aggression against life-saving institutions, inspired by the language of hatred that is being used against medical staff,” she said.
The Opposition has accused the Albanian government of manipulating the figures it publishes, in relation to the pandemic. They claim that the number of deaths is as much as double what is published each day. They have demanded that SPAK and the Prosecution investigate the matter immediately.
The government reacted by denying the claims and calling it an attack on health workers. Basha said that he is not accusing the doctors of wrongdoing, but rather the government. He called for Rama to accept a full investigation into the matter.
