High-Level CoE Delegation to Visit Albania to Evaluate ‘Grassroots Democracy’

A delegation from the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (CoE) will carry out a high-level visit to Tirana between 4 and 6 February to ascertain the “situation of grassroots democracy, in particular, the developments since the last local elections held in June 2019.”

The delegation will consist of the President of the Congress, Anders Knape, the President of the Chamber of Regions Gunn Marit, the President of the Chamber of Local Authorities Xavier Cadoret, and Congress Secretary General Andreas Kiefer. During their visit, they will meet with President Ilir Meta, Deputy Minister of the Interior Romina Kuko, Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj, and the Chair of the Central Election Commission Klement Zguri.

They are also scheduled to meet with a representative of Prime Minister Edi Rama and leader of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha.

They will also have discussions with the Mayor of Shkodra Voltana Ademi, whose request to review the validity of June 30 local elections the Constitutional Court accepted recently, President of the Regional Council of Shkoder Greta Bardeli, and the People’s Advocate Ms Erinda Ballanca.
