A majority of 53% of the Italian citizens living in Albania voted in favor of the constitution changes proposed by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in a referendum last Sunday. 46.2% voted against.
According to the numbers from Italian newspaper La Repubblica there are 1,016 Italians in Albania with the right to vote. Nearly 50% of them, 507, cast their vote – 254 in favor and 223 against, with 30 invalid votes.
The voting results of the referendum shows that the majority of Italian emigrants were in favor of the constitutional changes.
What is remarkable is that in countries with a smaller Italian presence there were comparatively more no-voters, showing that institutional representatives of embassies, consulates, military missions, and NGOs overall were more likely to vote no, preferring the current political system, whereas in countries with larger emigrant populations of workers and entrepreneurs, the yes camp prevailed.
