Yesterday evening the two youths from Zharrëz blocked the Fier–Berat road by setting fire to a car tire in the middle of the road. The police intervened by breaking up the blockade and starting criminal procedures against the two.
This morning, the hunger strikers in Zharrëz refused water and medical care.
For more than ten days, a number of inhabitants from the village Zharrëz in Mallakastra are on hunger strike. They claim that their life and property are threatened by the continuous oil drilling activities of Bankers Petroleum, which in previous years already caused large ecological and material damage to the environment and property of the local inhabitants.
The government has so far failed to issue a statement on the matter.
