The International Democrat Union (IDU) has condemned the demolition of the Albanian National Theater as an “undemocratic act of arbitrary government authority.”
In a statement on Wednesday, IDU called the demolition an “example of ruthlessness” that contradicts the rule of law and disrespects the conservation of cultural heritage. They added that the act of demolition benefits only a few people while harming civil society.
The union condemned the “clear violation of human rights” of Tirana citizens, and demanded the government to refrain from violence and arbitrary arrests.
IDU warned against further “degeneration of democracy under Prime Minister Rama”.
An alliance of center-right and conservative political parties, IDU comprises parties from 63 different countries, and it’s chaired by Stephen Harper, former Prime Minister of Canada.
