Italian President: Serbia Has To Become EU Member

During a meeting in Rome with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Italian President Sergio Mattarella declared:

Serbia is a leader of regional stability, which is why your entry into the EU is very important.

Italy is one of the closest trading partners of Serbia and one of the largest investors in the country. Besides President Mattarella, President Vučić also met Prime Minister Paolo Gentilioni, who expressed his willingness to continue the economic collaboration between the two countries.

Besides the common projects and the fight against corruption, the two leaders also discussed a trilateral meeting between Serbia, Italy, and Albania, which would aim to create close relations between the three countries and a strong economic collaboration.

Since he became President, Vučić has made already two visits to important strategic allies of Serbia: the US and Italy.

On July 17, President Vučić met US Vice President Mike Pence during an official visit to the US. During the meeting the Vice President announced a contribution of $10 million to the Regional Housing Program, a common initiative of Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia financed by the international community to provide housing to the populations displaced during the Balkan Wars. The US also supports Serbia EU’s membership.
