Jamaican Foreign Minister Kamina J. Smith has denied last night’s news about Jamaica’s recognition of Kosovo.
The minister retweeted Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi’s last night announcement, and commented that “To date, Jamaica has not recognized Kosovo as an independent state.”

Last night, Thaçi announced Jamaica’s recognition of Kosovo, on which he was allegedly notified by Kosovo Ambassador to the U.S., Vlora Çitaku. Thaçi thanked the U.S. Representative Eliot Engel in particular for this “result of hard work and lobbying of several years”.
The president’s announcement was followed by online messages of gratitude and celebration by Albanians in Kosovo and elsewhere, including the highest officials in the country – Speaker of Parliament, Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs etc.
However, according the Jamaican MFA’s latest tweet, the news is fake.
The ruling Vetevendosje Party MP Fitore Pacolli has demanded the dismissal of Ambassador Çitaku, if indeed she was the news source, and for her to be held accountable.
