Kosovo and Albania among Countries with Most Rapid Spread of Covid-19 in Europe

Kosovo and Albania appear to be among European countries with the highest number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people in the last two weeks, according to a chart posted by Kosovo’s Speaker of Parliament Vjosa Osmani.

Kosovo ranks third in Europe, Albania ranks sixth.

The rising numbers come after both countries did much better until May.

On Sunday, Osmani called on the Kosovo government to urgently intensify efforts against the spread.

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti, who replaced Albin Kurti on about three weeks ago, warned that doctors may have to make difficult moral decisions soon on whose life to save, due to the overwhelming number of hospitalized patients.

Hoti wrote in a Facebook post that if this growth rate continues to increase, those affected by COVID-19 will return to total isolation measures.

He called on everyone to wear a mask, social distance and wash hands, or else the government may reimpose lockdown measures.

In Albania, Minister of Health Ogerta Manastirliu assured the public that the government has enough hospital beds for large numbers of patients. She also reminded them to wear a mask and wash hands.

With a population of 1.8 million, Kosovo has had 48 deaths and 2590 cases in total.

The number of deaths in Albania reached 56 on Sunday, with a total of 2402 cases amidst its 2.8 million population since the first case was found in March.
