Kosovo Governing Coalition May Include Opposition Party after War Crimes Indictments

The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has implied that it is mulling to enlarge the governing coalition following the war crime indictments against the President and other Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) veterans.

LDK leader Isa Mustafa stated on Saturday that indictments have put the stability of the government and other Kosovo institutions at risk. He added that they are planning to have talks with parties that are interested in strengthening the country’s institutions and supporting indicted veterans.

“Now we are in a situation with many unknowns, which fails to guarantee not only the stability of the Government, but also that of all institutions in the country,” Mustafa said.

It contradicts Prime Minister Avdulah Hoti’s claim during a press conference in Tirana on Friday that his government is stable: “The government is totally stable. The President is in office for a full term.”

However, the government depends on votes of Serbian party MPs controlled by the Serbian government.

Mustafa said they will take actions now to face a possible situation in which President Thaci is charged and resigns.

“In the coming days, we will talk to all those who are willing not to strengthen individual or party power, but to strengthen the state of Kosovo and its functionality,” he said.

The LDK leader noted that Kosovo’s independence was a result of KLA’s war, LDK’s visionary politics, and NATO’s intervention, before announcing talks with political parties on strengthening institutions.

“Under these circumstances, Kosovo needs to provide stable and strong institutions, to support domestic and international justice institutions, an independent and free-from-influence justice, as well as to support its people who face justice, until its completion, because until then their guilt is only presumed.”

Most people expected to face indictments are believed to be KLA veterans. President Thaci’s Democratic Party of Kosovo was created by the political wing of KLA.

Whilst local media have suggested that Mustafa is preparing to enlarge the governing coalition to include the PDK, Kosovo’s largest party Vetevendosje is calling for snap elections.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has slammed the Kosovo court located in The Hague over the announcement of indictments, and has called on Kosovo parties to come together.
