Leader of Lëvizja Vetëvendosje (LVV) party of Kosovo, Albin Kurti is expected to be asked by President Hashim Thaçi to form a government. Kurti and Thaçi will meet today at 3pm.
LVV won the Kosovo general elections in October with 29 of the 120 seats. Opposition’s Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) came second, with 28 parliamentary seats.
The two former opposition parties have been in talks for three months but have not reached an agreement yet on whether they will form a coalition government.
The president’s official request for the prime-minister-designate to form the new government is expected to put more pressure on LVV and LDK to reach a coalition agreement. Kurti will have 15 days to get the parliament’s backing for his government.
Kosovo’s new parliament was constituted on December 26, and LVV’s Glauk Konjufca was elected its speaker with LDK’s votes.
The LDK leadership is also expected to meet today and decide on further steps regarding coalition talks with LVV.
