Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that political party money where the source is unknown is an example of corruption.
He made the comments during a public discussion on the Draft Law on the Financing of Political Parties. Kurti added that these issues impact democracy and the electorate.
“We must understand that money in election campaigns but also in political parties, between campaigns whose source and amount are unknown, represent elements of corruption and affect the electorate and our democracy,” said Kurti.
Companies that invest money in political parties, do so to win tenders and favour he added.
“When a Corporation gives millions to a politician, it does not give them because it has sympathy for the politician, but because it wants him or her to be in power tomorrow, to win the multiple of this investment through tenders and state licenses. So, for corporations, money for political parties is an investment that expects both return and profit “, he added.
Kurti concluded that he hopes to have a cross-party consensus on new principles because it is for the common good and democracy cannot be determined by corporations.
