The Kosovo government has scrapped tuition fees in public universities. Starting from October 1 this year, students will attend universities free of charge.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti announced his government’s decision on Friday, stating that education is “a universal human right and should be accessible to all.”
The decision will apply to Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Prior, fees at public universities amounted to 25 euros per semester for Bachelor’s degrees (after a first year that was free), and 150 euros for Masters.
While doctoral students are excluded from this decision, Kurti said they will receive other benefits. Currently, a doctorate costs 500 euros per semester.
Kurti added that this decision will increase students’ interest in education, and will contribute to social equality.
