Kosovo’s Vetevendosje (LVV) party has claimed that the country’s Constitutional Court ruling does not prohibit its leader, Albin Kurti, and MP Albulena Haxhiu from running in the elections.
In an interview with Radio Free Europe, LVV spokesperson Përparim Kryeziu argued that Kurti and Haxhiu were sentenced to probation, not prison. This, according to Kryeziu, entails no legal consequences.
In 2018, LVV MPs Albin Kurti, Albulena Haxhiu, Faton Topalli and Donika Kadaj-Bujupi, were sentenced to probation after setting off tear gas in Parliament.
On Monday, the Constitutional Court of Kosovo ruled to forbid persons convicted in the past three years from running in the upcoming elections.
Specifically, no person convicted of a criminal act via final ruling in the past three years “may run for Member of Parliament or win a valid seat in the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo.”
