Latvia’s foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics has voiced support for Albania and North Macedonia’s EU accession in an annual foreign policy report published this week.
He noted that Latvia’s position on the EU is that it must remain a strong, values-based union of nations which holds high standards of democracy. Furthermore, the process of change in the EU and the debate on the future of the EU in light of new challenges such as a successful governance model should not impede this,
Additionally, he emphasized the importance of keeping institutional balance and improving the efficiency of decision-making in the EU. This is necessary to defend EU interest and increase influence globally.
“Latvia is convinced that the effectiveness and sustainability of the EU’s foreign policy is largely ensured by maintaining the principle of unanimity in foreign policy decision-making and the use of qualified majority voting in the EU’s foreign relations and security is not applicable,” the Minister said.
