The proposal of candidates for Albania’s Constitutional Court while not following the process laid down by law continues.
The Judicial Appointments Council is today considering the candidacy of Sonila Bejtja for the seventh position. In an official announcement, the Council wrote it will conduct an interview with her today and approve the final list for the 7th place in the Court.
As Exit has explained previously, the 5th and 6th appointees were appointed without following due process or the law, and now the 7th member has been proposed with the same violations. In short, a total of three candidates should be proposed at once and they should be the top three candidates ranked by the Council.
This has not happened. Rather two candidates, then one, and now another one has been put forward. This violates both the law on the Constitutional Court and the Constitution.
Despite the irregularities, the appointments have been praised by internationals like the EU, and the US Ambassador.
President Ilir Meta acknowledged the legal shortcomings of the appointment process last week.
