Major Opposition Party Is Willing to Join Kosovo Ruling Coalition

The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) may join the ruling coalition, if the war crimes indictment against its leader Kadri Veseli is confirmed by The Hague court, a senior official of the PDK told Exit News.

“There is the will for that,” the source shortly confirmed for Exit News.

Prishtina-based newspaper Koha reported on Monday that the ruling Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) are discussing offers for PDK to join the coalition. One of the reported offers would be for PDK to propose a candidate for president and to lead the ministries of foreign affairs and health.

However, Exit’s source said that the parties are far from reaching a deal, adding that “there is nothing concrete yet”.

The 5-year mandate of Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci will expire in February, and the ruling coalition lacks the votes to elect the new president.

The Constitution of Kosovo stipulates that the president shall be elected by a two thirds (2/3) majority of all deputies, i.e. 80 out 120 votes.

The ruling coalition has 61 votes, minus one MP who is currently serving a 15-month prison sentence for embezzling €26,000 through an NGO.
