Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela is under investigation for the murder of migrants at sea, following a report filed by a local NGO.
Both Abela and the Armed Forces of Malta have been accused of homicide after he closed the country’s ports. A few days later, five bodies were found on a migrant boat by Malta’s search and rescue forces. It was reported that another seven were missing, assumed deceased.
The surviving 47 people were returned to Libya, an unsafe country of origin, in violation of international and maritime law.
The Prime Minister said his conscience was clean and that he stands by his decision.
Abela assumed office after his predecessor Joseph Muscat was forced to resign over links between him, senior members of his cabinet, and the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
