Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj Fined for Breaching Anti-Propaganda Rule

The Central Election Commission has fined Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj for conducting prohibited activities during the election period.

The fine against Veliaj is 70,000 ALL (EUR 565) for the following violations:

  1. Carrying out prohibited activities
  2. Failure to report these activities
  3. Promotion of prohibited activities

The decision of the CEC came after accusations made by LSI for a series of visits undertaken by Mayor Veliaj to the houses that are being rebuilt following the earthquake of November 26, 2019.

The CEC adopted a decision banning the use of state resources, including reconstruction following a national disaster, for the benefit of the electoral campaign.

Veliaj said he will appeal the decision and that he is being fined for working. He accused the CEC of favoring the opposition as it is them that have made these denunciations. Veliaj added that the law hasn’t been violated and any suggestion it had been was “immoral”.

Earlier, the CEC asked the government to remove the Socialist Party logos from the ‘Albania we Want’ portal.

In a  decision taken on January 30, State Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi argues that placing SP symbols on this portal, which is official, is a violation of the law.
