The International and European Federations of Journalists (IFJ/EFJ) has called out Belarusian authorities for the persecution of journalists and media workers in the country.
In a statement released on Tuesday, they call on international organizations to take strict measures to support press freedom. They call on the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the European Union to take action in order to restore the rule of law in Belarus.
Belarusian Police searched homes of dozens of journalists and rights activists across the country, on Tuesday.
“Journalists are being attacked for exposing the crimes committed by the Belarusian authorities against their own people, in a blatant violation of the right to freedom of expression,” the Amnesty International also warned.
Authorities said the searches of journalists and human rights activists were tied to an investigation looking for evidence of “protest financing”.
The investigators are trying to identify the sources of funding for the mass demonstrations organized in the country to contest the outcome of the fraudulent elections of 9 August 2020.
