President Ilir Meta stated today that the Socialist Party’s decision to hold one-party local elections on June 30 has plunged the country into a deeper crisis.
During a meeting with a delegation of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, which is conducting a fact-finding mission in Albania, Meta stated:
“The one-party voting of June 30 did not resolve the crisis, but it badly damaged local democracy, further plunging the country into the path of lawlessness and state capture.”
The president stressed the need to restore the legitimacy of institutions through free elections.
He said the 9 conditions set by the German Bundestag for opening EU talks with Albania clearly reflect the serious problems the country is facing, and called them the safest map leading towards EU integration.
President Meta also discussed with the delegation certain laws passed by the parliament, which according to him violate local autonomy and basic principles of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights, and which are yet to be reviewed by the Constitutional Court.
