US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has welcomed the electoral reform agreement in Albania and encouraged all political parties to vote for it in parliament and implement it.
“I also welcome Albania’s cross-party agreement on electoral reform, which will strengthen its democracy and further solidify Albania’s European future. We encourage all stakeholders to codify this political agreement,” Pompeo stated on Wednesday during a press conference where he presented the International Religious Freedom report 2019.
Albania’s Socialist majority and the non-parliamentary opposition reached an agreement last week on some administrative changes to the Electoral Code.
The agreement was reached with the mediation of US Ambassador Yuri Kim, British Ambassador Duncan and EU Ambassador Soreca.
