London-based Albanian designer Nensi Dojak has had one of her designs worn to the VMAs by model Bella Hadid and was subsequently featured in Vogue.
The Central Saint Martens graduate showed a collection in London in February where she received rave reviews, including Vogue’s chief critic Saah Mower.
Dojak left Tirana when she was 16 to attend school in London. Her clothes are inspired by the ’90s and include sheer, minimal, simple, and somewhat risque designs that could have come from a 90’s fashion magazine. The top and trousers worn by Hadid are selling for $742 and $1063 respectively.
She told Vogue that “the minimalist, industrial nature of the ’90s felt raw and honest”. Dojak added that the “focus on detail and the juxtaposition of feminine and masculine” was a key part of her work.
Hadid, daughter of real-estate magnate Mohammed Hadid and former model Yolanda, and sister of model Gigi Hadid is the first celebrity to wear Dojak’s designs on the red carpet. Introduced to Dojak’s work by stylist Carlos Nazario, Dojak sent Hadid a number of pieces to choose from.
Dojak said she stayed up late to watch the award show live as she was excited to see her work at the event.
Since the event, Dojak has caused a stir in Albania as her fellow citizens are understandably proud that she is representing Albanian talent internationally.
“I am happy to bring a little pride to my small country that has many talented people and I think need a push and support.”
