Montenegro Mulls Chinese and Russian COVID-19 Vaccines

The Government of Montenegro is considering using COVID-19 vaccines from China and Russia, as well as from the EU.

Health Minister Jelena Borovinic Bojovic said in a press conference that they were currently negotiating with Pfizer and AstraZeneca to buy the vaccine. In addition to this, she said they were considering vaccines from Russia and China although primarily their focus was on those manufactured in the west.

When pressed to say when vaccinations would start, she was unable to pinpoint a time due to ongoing negotiations. She hoped they would arrive by the end of January.

Montenegro is a member of COVAX and in October agreed to pay EUR 646,000 for 248,800 doses, enough for just 20% of the population.

Borovinic Bojovic said that should vaccinations start at the end of January, medical staff and those over 80-years-old will be vaccinated first.
