Montenegro Parliament Approves New Minority Government Focused on EU Reforms

On Thursday, the parliament of Montenegro approved a minority government led by Dritan Abazovic, who promised to advance reforms aimed at European Union accession.

The 43rd government of Montenegro received the support of 45 out of the 81 MPs in parliament, including the crucial 30 votes of the Democratic Party of Socialists of President Milo Djukanovic, who was previously in opposition. However, the DPS is not part of the new government.

Abazovic’s party has 4 MPs, while other parties supporting the government include the pro-Serb Socialist People’s Party as well as  those of ethnic Bosniaks, Albanians and Croats.

Acceleration of reforms leading to EU accession, with a focus on rule of law and economic development will be the main priorities of his government, Abazovic stated in parliament ahead of the vote.

The young politician decided to part ways with the pro-Serb parties of the previous coalition and bring the government down following disagreement among the two largest parties over replacing technocrat ministers with party politicians.
