Montenegro Receives COVID-19 Vaccines from EU on March 31

Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegrin Dritan Abazovic has announced that on March 31 the country will be supplied with vaccines against COVID-19 by the European Union. He did not provide details on which vaccines will be arriving.

Abazovic made the announcement through a post on the social network Twitter, following a meeting with EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi in Brussels.

In late January, the Secretary of State of the Montenegrin Ministry of Health, Borko Bajic announced that 84,000 AstraZeneca vaccines would be distributed to Montenegro through the Covax program.

He had stated that the delivery of 25%- 35% of vaccines is expected to occur in the first quarter of the year and the rest in the second quarter.

In October, the previous Montenegrin government signed an agreement through which Montenegro joined the World Health Organization’s Covax mechanism. The deal envisions the purchase of about 250,000 doses of vaccine, which will vaccinate about 20% of the population.

Montenegro reported 18 COVID-19 related death on Wednesday, while 553 new cases of infection were registered.
