Municipality of Tirana Files Police Report against Opposition Leader after Visiting Students

The Socialist Party led Municipality of Tirana has filed a police report against Democratic Party leader Lulzim Basha following a visit to the Student City yesterday.

Basha visited student accommodation, Student Building 4 in the afternoon, in the company of students. After the visit, the Municipality reacted by saying that his visit was against the regulation and that Basha had been violent to the receptionist of the building. They then filed a report against him and his companions, with the police.

The Municipality stated “The Municipality of Tirana explains that the student premises can only be entered with prior permission from the Dormitory Directorate, a procedure that is also strictly followed by the families of the students in the buildings. Lulzim Basha did not request and did not obtain permission to enter building 4.”

The Democratic Party denied that he was in any way violent or aggressive to the receptionist of the building and said that Basha had a normal conversation with her. In a press conference, the PD said that Basha’s visit to the premises had scared Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj.

“In no country in the free world would the opposition leader be prevented from visiting a public place or meeting students. This could happen in North Korea, or in the Tirana of Erion Veliaj, where just a visit scares them to death as it may tear down the facade they propagate.”

In a Facebook post today, Basha explained that he had been invited by students to hear about their lives and concerns. He called the ban on entry “orders from above” and said they were an attempt to intimidate and threaten people.

“Last night I was invited by some students to see how they live and list to their concerns. Our students are the future of this country, their concerns are our concerns.

This is the path we have chosen. The way of listening, the way of true representation of all Albanians.

When we arrived at the building we met with a dormitory worker who asked us to leave. This message came from above.

That’s actually the opposite way with ours. The way to intimidate and threaten people to shut their mouths and keep them under control,” Basha said.
