EU Ministers of Foreign and European Affairs failed to reach a unanimous decision on opening accession talks with Albania and North Macedonia.
At a press conference following today’s meeting in Luxembourg, Finnish Minister for European Affairs Tytti Tuppurainen said they had tried in all ways to agree on opening negotiations with both countries, but some member states had not changed their minds.
Minister Tuppurainen and Commissioner Hahn declined to clarify which were the three refusing countries, but it was clear that France was one of them.
They said a decision will be taken by EU leaders at the European Council summit on 17-18 in Brussels.
Hahn said “I have no clear indication” that President Macron will change his mind in the coming two days. Macron wants the EU to reform before any enlargement takes place.
Hahn avoided answering the question whether the Albanian government would be responsible for a possible negative decision on accession talks.
