The latest poll by the International Republican Institute shows VMRO-DPMNE, North Macedonia’s biggest opposition party, are likely to defeat the SDSM, the leading coalition party, at the next general elections.
The conservative opposition party polled 20%, while SDSM obtained 17%. DUI, the largest ethnic Albanian political party, came in third with 7%.
The poll was conducted in late November and through most of December. Brima and KANTAR polled 1,226 citizens for IRI.
SDSM said that the IRI poll is from four months ago and does not reflect the citizens’ current mood.
The newly released poll also shows strong support for the EU and the US. In total, 85% agree that the interests of North Macedonia are best served with strong relations with the EU and 76% agree this is the case for the United States.
Meanwhile, 64% of citizens agree that their interests are best served by strong relations with China, while 60% say the same of Russia. This is an eleven-point increase for China and a six-point increase for Russia from a poll taken in February 2020.
When asked about political parties, only 21% of North Macedonia’s citizens believe that they are transparent with handling money received from the state budget.
