PD: We Won’t Register without Caretaker Government

Today the opposition confirmed once again that they will not register at the Central Election Commission (KQZ) until the creation of a caretaker government that will organize general elections.

According to a press statement of the Democratic Party (PD):

The opposition coalition that gathered today confirms the position of not registering at the KQZ until a political pact for the creation of a caretaker government has been arrived at that will secure free elections. The opposition coalition decided to hold a large protest on May 7 in Kavaja.

May 7 is the date for the early local elections in Kavaja, after former PS mayor Elvis Rroshi was dismissed under the decriminalization law.

Today is the legal deadline determined by the Electoral Code for the registration of political parties. Until now, 29 parties have registered and 3 more parties are expected to register later today.

Prime Minister Rama has often said that there will be no caretaker government and that he is ready to enter the elections ever on him own. In case the opposition’s demand for a caretaker government is not fulfilled, it now appears that only the PS and several smaller parties that are currently without mandate will take part in the elections.

This would imply a considerable escalation of the political crisis, taking on proportions of the one in 1996.
