Gështenjas village inhabitants in Pogradec are currently protesting the construction of a waste collection site that will be part of the Maliq landfill in their village.
Inhabitants say that depositing waste in their village will gravely damage the arable land, the water supply, and the entire village’s crops, that are the sole source of income for the village’s families.
The Maliq landfill opened in the summer of 2018 and serves as a waste collection site for the entire Korça district.
The landfill is owned and managed by the Korça District Waste Management Company, whose shareholders constitute the Devoll, Kolonja, Korça, Maliq, Pustec, and Pogradec municipalities.
