The Albanian police have fined 87 citizens, including opposition leaders Lulzim Basha and Monika Kryemadhi, for violating coronavirus preventative restrictions by protesting the demolition of the National Theatre overnight.
Citizens spent the night near the National Theatre building to prevent the government from demolishing the building.
In the evenings of May 14 and May 15, the police issued fines to 87 citizens, and suspended their licenses, for “gathering near the National Theatre from 8pm to midnight.”
Artists and representatives of the opposition claimed that they were determined to remain near the National Theatre to protect it despite the fines and police intimidation.
Last week, the police forcibly disbanded protests against the government’s restrictions for violating coronavirus preventative measures.
