Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has assured the public that the government will address all the concerns raised by the Venice Commission in their opinion regarding the country’s controversial anti-defamation law.
Following the publication of the Commission’s legal opinion yesterday, Rama tweeted his gratitude for the opinion and called for the government and the parliament to quickly address the suggestions made in it. “Let us hurry to legally guarantee the right of any person to be protected from slander, and the obligation of every portal to be identified as subject to the law,” the Prime Minister concluded.
On June 18, the Venice Commission opposed the anti-defamation law as it currently exists, arguing that it grants undue jurisdiction to the Albanian Media Authority (AMA) and foresees excessively harsh sanctions.
