Prosecution Accuses Seven in 2019 Airport Heist Case

Today, the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution Office (SPAK) has concluded its investigation into the theft of €6.6 million from the tarmac at the Tirana International Airport on April 9, 2019.

The case will now go to the Special Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Court, who will decide whether it will take the case or whether further investigations are needed.

Eldi and Klemend Çala, Oltion Veseli, Elton Pikli, Renaldo Sula, Alkond Bengasi and Saimir Çela stand accused of armed robbery. Talo Çela, another defendant, remains at large.

SPAK found that the band was led by Admir Murataj, who was killed by police during the robbery.

Another arrested defendant, Ragip Hajdini, passed away a few days ago after succumbing to a grave illness.

The April 9 robbery took place on the airport tarmac, while money was being transferred from the armored cash transport vehicle into the plane heading to Vienna. The armed robbers took the money and fled a few minutes before the plane was scheduled to depart.
