The Tirana Prosecution Office has decided not to pursue an investigation into former Constitutional Court judge Besnik Imeraj who resigned before the vetting process began.
The Prosecution dismissed the request of the Independent Qualification Commission (KPK), which had referred Imeraj’s entire dossier to the office. According to the Prosecution, the dossier contained no criminal activities.
Imeraj resigned January 31, 2018, a few days before KPK started the process of his reassessment. Though his term would end in 2022, he decided to withdraw from his position “for personal reasons.”
Despite his withdrawal, KPK decided to refer Imeraj’s dossier, assembled during the administrative investigation, to the Prosecution.
Besnik Imeraj was one of the two judges who voted against the vetting law. He was also part of the judicial body in several important trials like the Ilir Meta Dossier regarding alleged corruption of current President Ilir Meta when he was Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Gërdec Dossier dealing with explosion of a weapons dismantling factory which leveled an entire village, and the Durrës-Kukës-Morina Highway Dossier implying several ministers from the Berisha government.
