Rama: Also Elections without PD

In his weekly Facebook monologue, Prime Minister Edi Rama has stated that the elections will not be postponed, whether the opposition will boycott them or not.

He argued that “contract with the people” lasts until June 18, and that the government cannot one-sidedly decide to break it up in order to make place for a caretaker government, as demanded by the opposition.

The opposition may seek the removal of the government the entire day, and a caretaker government the entire night, but cannot impose these demands on the government or Albania, where the people decide by vote. This government will continue the work it started until the end of the contract.

The Prime Minister called the opposition protest of the PD, which has been going on for nearly a month in front of the Prime Ministry, a “false crisis,” and a “popular revolution without people.”

He also stated that he believes that the PD will return to Parliament to vote for the vetting, “because if it doesn’t do that for Albania and its voters, it has to do so in order not to seal its electoral fate with shame.”

Even though Prime Minister Rama expressed his readiness to make changes in the Electoral Code, now that the formal preparations for the elections have started, it seems unlikely that any legal change according to the OSCE-ODIHR recommendations will be implemented on time.

Meanwhile the opposition continues its protest and boycott of Parliament.
