Rama–Basha Position Update

Yesterday, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that he will enter the elections without the opposition and that today would be the beginning of the electoral campaign. Meanwhile, opposition leader Lulzim Basha called for a protest on May 13 for free and fair elections.

These were there main declarations over the weekend.

PD leader Basha stated yesterday after a meeting with his parliamentary group:

We are open to political dialogue. If the other side accepts responsibility for the catastrophic situation of the country, we are open to give, together with a political, the Albanians free and fair elections. This battle is not waged for us, but for the right of the citizens. […]

The PD will never take the decision to boycott the elections. This is entire battle is waged to take part in the elections. Those that will be organized on June 18 will not be elections, they will be votes for a monist system.

In his weekly monologue, Prime Minister Rama stated:

The conclusion that the elections of June 18 will go without the PD is taking a definitive form. It is unfortunate that my patience wasn’t enough.

He called upon all the supporters of the PD to come out and vote on June 18:

Tomorrow we start toward June 18 without the PD. It cannot block the new justice and our road for Albanian that we love beyond June 18. But in absence of the PD on the June 18 elections, we will not forget any Albanian that hasn’t been able to vote the PD. We will invite any reasonable Democrat to join for in Albania that we love. Or united without division forward, or backward cut off from Europe for the interest of a clique of people.

15 parties will participate in the June 18 elections, without any electoral coalitions.
