In an interview with Deutsche Welle, the director of the International Monitoring Operation (ONM) Genoveva Ruiz Calavera spoke about the beginning of the vetting procedure and its importance for the rule of law in Albania.
The vetting is so important for Albania that it can be considered a historical moment, a defining moment for not only the judicial system in the country. The strengthening of an neutral, independent, responsible, efficient and professional judiciary also has importance for a broader challenge: to consolidate in an incontrovertible manner, once and for all, the rule of law in Albania.
The ONM headed by Ruiz Calavera expects that although preparatory work has already started, the actual reassessment will start in the Fall:
The ONM is ready to offer its highly qualified expertise to start the reassessment process, which we hope will start this Fall. However, to be clear, whereas the international community is responsible for the monitoring of the process, it depends on the local structures, the vetting institutions that have been established, to now directly complete the reassessment.
