Ivica Dacic was elected as the new speaker of Serbia’s Parliament on Thursday.
Ivica Dacic, who was Serbia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that the position of Speaker of the Parliament of Serbia according to the Constitution is the highest position he has held and that only “political ignorant or someone evil” could claim otherwise, rejecting claims that he was demoted.
“I am not a young politician, so if I cared about some functions, I passed them all. This is in a way a return home, I have been a member of the Serbian Parliament since 1992,” Dacic told TV Pink, Free Europe Radio reported.
The leader of the Socialist Party of Serbia, SPS, Ivica Dacic was also country’s Prime Minister during the period of 2012- 2014. During 2008- 2012 he held the position of deputy Prime Minister.
After the SPS’s leader, the Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic died while in detention in The Hague in March 2006, Dacic took over the leadership of the party.
Ivica Dacic was former spokesperson of Milosevic, however he claims that he has put his ultra-nationalist past behind him.
Slobodan Milosevic, former Yugoslavian president according The Hague Tribunal’s indictment was charged with genocide, deportation, murder and persecution on religious, political and racial backgrounds but he died half way through his trial.
