Serbian Foreign Minister Talks Kosova Partition

“I have been talking about a partition for about 10, 15 years, and I think it’s the only possible and fast solution. However, this is not the only solution, all possible options should be considered,” Serbian deputy PM and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dačić said, according to the Serbian B92.

“For the West, the only option is the recognition of Kosovo’s independence. There is a lack of solutions that can be implemented, and there is also a lack of proposals. It would be good for everyone to present their proposals, rather than go with nationalistic positions that are not acceptable to either side,” he added.

Dačić’s declaration comes at the heels of Kosovar President Hashim Thaçi’s statement that both Kosovo and Serbia are willing to reach an agreement.

After the Sofia Summit in the beginning of May, Thaçi spoke for the media, stating: “The process won’t be at all an easy one, neither for Kosovo, nor for Serbia. We are aware that no one will get a hundred percent, but what is certain is that by achieving this legally binding agreement, both Kosovo and Serbia will become a part of the European family.”

Furthermore, Thaçi said:

I am certain that this process will have a win-win solution, meaning both Kosova and Serbia will be able to look at a tangible European future following the implementation of that agreement. Therefore, there will be no losers and no country’s rights will be infringed. Instead we will find ways of cooperating that fall within the European standards for the accomodation of the Serbian community in Kosova.

As has been mentioned earlier, various EU Member States are currently drafting a new proposal both sides can agree to. This proposal includes granting a special status to Mitrovica in Kosova, similar to that of Vatican City in Italy.
