After an agreement was reached between the central government of Kosovo and representatives of the northern Kosovar municipality of Mitrovica, the illegal wall built along the river Iber was broken down on Sunday. The wall, built on the Serbian side of the city, had raised ethnic tensions in recent weeks, together with the arrest of former Kosovar Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj and the “nationalist train” incident.
The agreement to destroy the Mitrovica wall has been the result of negotiations between the Serbian and Kosovar governments in Brussels, under the guidance of EU Foreign Affairs Representative Federica Mogherini.
According to Natalya Apostolova, the head of the office of the European Union in Kosovo, the destruction of the wall “shows that the two sides can arrive at an agreement when there is the political will.”
I am also looking forward to the beginning of the discussion about the association of municipalities with a Serbian majority, with the same commitment that we had to the removal of this wall. I hope that we will have good results.
