Several Earthquakes Shake Elbasan, Lushnje, Fier, Tirana and Durres This Week

A number of small earthquakes have been felt in the regions of Elbasan, Lushnja, Tirana and Durres this week.

The day before yesterday there was a quake measuring 4 on the Richter scale hit at 21:21, 20km west of Elbasan and 8km northeast of Lushnje. At 01:25 a second shock measuring 4.3 struck 29km west of Elbasan. Then at 08.58 yesterday, a third occurred measuring 3.5 magnitude 15km from Fier.

Last night there was a 4.0 magnitude quake felt 25km from Elbasan and a 3.4 29km from Tirana.

At the start of the week, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake was felt in Tirana and Durres.

It is one year since the September earthquake that caused damage throughout Tirana, Durres and the surrounding areas. Then on November 26, a large 6.1 earthquake caused significant damage and killed 51 people. Seismologists that spoke to Exit said the likelihood of another large earthquake in the near future is very unlikely.

They recommended that the Albanian government retrofit existing buildings to prevent collapses and damage like what was seen in November.
