Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution Requested to Investigate €71 Million Concession Contract

Nisma Thurje, a civil society organization, requested the newly established Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution Office (SPAK) to investigate the concession contract for the sterilization of medical equipment in Albanian hospitals.

Physician Artan Koni and Nisma activist Endri Shabani told the media that they had filed a complaint against officials involved in the concession contract. They did not mention specific names but added that their report was based on suspicions about the cost, quality and duration of concession.

In 2017, the government awarded a concession contract worth more than €71 million for the sterilization of medical equipment in the next ten years. This is one of the four major concession contracts in the healthcare sector, which altogether amount to about €290 million. The other three are health check-up, hemodialysis and hospital laboratories concessions.
