Strong Earthquake Strikes Croatia

Another strong earthquake hit Croatia on Tuesday around noon.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported its magnitude was 6.4 while the epicenter is 47 km southeast of the Croatian capital, Zagreb.

There is no data yet on potential injuries.

The EMSC states that this is the strongest earthquake to hit Croatia this year and that earthquakes of this magnitude could cause significant damage near the epicenter.

“We have mobilized all services to help people and clean up the destroyed parts. Now, the main thing is to save lives,” the Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenkovic wrote on Twitter.

Croatian state broadcaster HRT said a girl died in the earthquake in Petrinja, a town southeast of the capital that was hit hardest by the earthquake, Associated Press reports.

“My town has been completely destroyed, we have dead children,” Petrinja Mayor Darinko Dumbovic said in a statement broadcast by HRT TV. “This is like Hiroshima – half of the city no longer exists.”

A day earlier, December 28th, a moderate earthquake shook central Croatia and its capital, Zagreb, causing damage to several buildings.
