Students occupying seven faculties of the University of Tirana were joined today by students of the Universities of Durres and Elbasan. Starting from today, they will also boycott lectures and occupy their universities until their demands are fully met.
The Council of Students of the University of Durres said in a public statement:
“The university is ours, and our resistance will surely take place inside our faculties. Starting from Tuesday, 7:00 am, the students of the University of Durres will occupy the university like our colleagues have done throughout the country. Academic activity is very important to us but a qualitative education system is more important. Hence, students of the University of Durres will start a boycott of lectures until the government retracts the law on higher education and meets out demands.”
Yesterday was the fifth day of occupation in faculties of Economics, Law, Medicine, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Architecture, and Polytechnic University of Tirana, where students spent their nights.
Tens of professors have expressed their support for students’ struggle, while also condemning the police violence inside faculties. Professors also have asked the government to retract the law on higher education and start an inclusive open debate on the new law.
