The Movement for the University has accused the Rectorate of the University of Tirana for mocking students in response to student’s request for a reduction in tuition fees.
In a statement, the Movement said. that the abolition of fees is a necessity in the conditions of online learning where students are not using the university infrastructure.
They state:
“Despite the demands and constant student dissatisfaction, the Ministry of Education has not reacted and has not even considered the petition signed by 8000 students for the cancellation of fees.”
The response that the Rectorate has given them regarding this request for the Movement is “mocking and shameful”.
The response of the Rectorate states that there is no reduction of fees but the registration fee has been reduced from 2500 ALL (EUR 20) to 2000 ALL (EUR 16).
Previously, the Movement for the University sent a petition with 8,000 signatures to the Ministry of Education requesting the cancellation of the fees due to classes taking place online as a response to COVID-19 precautions.
The students supported their request with data from studies which prove how effective online learning has been.
According to an LPU study 60% of students are dissatisfied with the way online learning is taking place. 1570 students participated in the study.
The study revealed that 44.5% have partial internet access and over 70% are required to attend lectures via mobile phone.
Meanwhile, another Civic Resistance study conducted on December 17 highlights the same situation.
According to this study:
- 77.5% of students attend online without a Laptop or PC.
- Only 60% of students participate in the lessons
- Students evaluate with a grade of 8 professors and 5-6 secretaries of the Faculties
- 6% of students spend 20 euros per month on the internet
