This Week in Albania’s Judicial Reform: 2 Judges, 1 Prosecutor Confirmed

As the judicial vetting process continues in Albania, the Independent Qualification Commission this week confirmed in office 2 judges and 1 prosecutor.

On Monday, The Qualification Commission confirmed in office judge Iliba Bezati, at Vlora Appeal Court, after reviewing the documentation and conducting the hearing.

On Wednesday, Dritan Hasani judge at the District Court of Përmet was also confirmed in office.

Judge Dritan Hasani was positively assessed in all three components of the vetting process: asset assessment, background assessment, and proficiency. 

Tirana Prosecutor Ledina Riza successfully passed the vetting process on Friday.

Prosecutor Riza positively assessed the three qualification criteria in the vetting process. The lack of public denunciations was considered by the Qualification Commission as a “rare case”.

On Tuesday March 16, the Special Appeals Chamber (KPA) will reevaluate prosecutor Bilbil Mete.

Since 2018, Albania has been implementing a judicial reform on the transitional re-evaluation of judges and prosecutors. While a large number of them were fired, as a side negative effect, the country was left for more than two years without a functioning High Court and Constitutional Court.
