Three Albanian police officers have been arrested after a 31-year-old man died in custody in the police precinct of Kavaja on Wednesday, May 4.
The police claim that the man had by suicide after being arrested and charged for theft.
Yesterday, the General Director of the State Police, Gledis Nano, sent an inspection team to Kavaja to investigate the matter.
Kavaja’s police precinct had recently been inspected by representatives of the Ombudsman, but the findings have yet to be published.
According to a report on prisons commissioned by the European Council, Albania has one of the highest rates of suicides in prisons.
