Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci stated that it is the time for the European Union to put mutual recognition on the table during Prishtina-Belgrade dialogue.
“…and it should be the first point of the agreement, then other issues come easier instead of starting or continuing with technical issues that have been discussed for ten years now in Brussels,” Thaci told media after the meeting with the EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak on Wednesday.
He added that mutual recognition is the only thing that guarantees stability in the region and Europe for both Kosovo and Serbia.
Thaci said that he held informal meetings with the high state authorities in Washington and Paris, where the same topics were discussed.
“I see better coordination, a higher level of involvement of both the EU and the USA and this is a clear message, a good one. I think it’s encouraging for us in Kosovo to have a unique dialogue process and to finalise the process as soon as possible with mutual recognition.” Thaci said.
This is the second meeting between Thaci and Lajcak these last days, following the one on October 5 in Brussels.
After he visited Brussels, Thaci travelled to the United States of America but there were no details about his visit except for meeting the Albanian- American community.
Exit also sent questions to the presidency on Tuesday about Thaci’s agenda in the US, but by the time of publication, no answer was forthcoming.
Thaci’s visit in Brussels and after in the US is the first after since July when he was interviewed in The Hague-based Specialist Prosecutor’s Office. He is indicted for war crimes and crimes against humanity but charges have yet to be confirmed by a judge.
Kosovo’s president has often criticized the EU for its approach towards Kosovo, especially on the visa non- liberalization.
Today, Lajcak will meet the leaders of political parties in Kosovo, including the head of the Serbian List, Goran Rakic who warned on Tuesday that they will leave central and local institutions if the Association of Serb Municipalities is not established.
